Visit Mongolia, via Devon
It was never like this in Genghis Khan's day.
When you stay in a yurt at 30-acre Cuckoo Down Farm, near Ottery St Mary, you don't have to sleep on rough ground, in Mongol warrior style. Instead, you get double beds, carpets, rugs, cushions and sofas, plus room to swing if not a yak, at least a decent-sized cat (the circular yurts have an 18-foot diameter). On top of which you get a wood-burning stove, a kitchen and a lavatory. Only concession to ruggedness is the short, open-air walk to the showers.
